Project Overview

State Road 292 - Sorrento Road

This project involves safety and capacity improvements to the existing State Road 292 (Sorrento Road) corridor in Escambia County.  The project study area extends along State Road 292 (Sorrento Road) from the south end of the Theo Baars Bridge to SR 173 (Blue Angel Parkway).  The length of the study area is approximately 6.2 miles.

Justification for the proposed project improvements is based on existing and projected socio-economic and travel conditions within the State Road 292 (Sorrento Road) corridor study area.  Providing improvements to SR 292 (Sorrento Road) is required to improve travel service, enhance coastal evacuation operations, reduce or eliminate unsafe roadway characteristics, serve the community population and foster economic growth projected for the area in an effective and efficient manner.  Since there are no other transportation facilities serving the southwestern portion of Escambia County, Perdido Key, and southeastern Baldwin County, Alabama, it is critical that transportation capacity be increased on this roadway.

Environmental features that will be considered include involvement with community values, contamination, archaeological or historical sites, public lands, endangered or threatened species, and wetlands.  Design concepts include the determination of cost and development of a matrix that compares construction and engineering costs, right-of-way costs, business damages, relocation estimates and operational effectiveness. A comprehensive analysis is necessary in order to perform an accurate evaluation.
